On Sex & Intimacy
“Why do you use the word intimacy when you talk about sex?”
You know, people think that intimacy is about sex. Yes, sex can be a form of intimacy, but it is not intimacy itself. I’ve felt much more intimate with people that I haven’t had sex with, and at times, didn’t feel intimate with people I had it with... Sex can be an expression of intimacy, but it is not the ultimate milestone of intimacy to check off as some people make it out to be in relationships these days.
Intimacy if I had to define is about... truth, yes truth, that’s what it is about. It is when you realize you can tell someone your truth, show the you without all the masks you put on daily to navigate this world, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand bare in front of then, naked metaphorically, and their response is 'you're safe with me'- that's intimacy.
But then again you can only be as intimate with someone, as you are with yourself and, as you are with the truth. And no not those stories you make up to tell yourself so you can sleep at night, the raw throbbing truth. Can you take that in? can you swallow that? or do you just spit it out like the rest?
Truthfully yours,
Kay.
