On Professionals
Are you one...?
So I was feeling a bit too hammered to work today and was thinking of taking the day off.
But deep down I knew I was just being a lazy duck.
And then I just said to myself:
You're a professional. Professionals Show Up.
And then I got my bony ass up made the cup of filter coffee, and got to work.
The thing is not every day is going to be exciting, not every day is going to be innovative and full of ideas of how to cure Alzheimers.
Most of the time you just have to do the work that needs to be get done. And that could be fixing bugs, it could be dealing with a customer issue, it could be designing something that doesn’t work, it could be cleaning something up that you made a mistake on before.
It could be something new. It could be a hassle. It could be all these things. And that’s what work usually is, for the most part.
But part of the job is people trust you for being a proffessional and entrust with getting the job done.
There will be some days that just straight-on suck. And some days that feel amazing. And you can't just bounce back and forth. You have to keep showing up day in and day out.
Professionals deliver. They use the resources that they have, the timeline they have, the budget they have and they deliver.
Professionals merely show up. Not needing anything, not in anticipation of needing something, but merely because they can.
Professionals are formed by sacrifice, commitment and concentration.
Be a professional.
(Yeah its a bit stoic, I think it's probably all the Marcus Aurelius that I've been reading recently)
