Rollnick's Questions For Seeing Your Problems Clearly.

  1. What makes you think this is a problem?
  2. What difficulties have you had related to this problem?
  3. How have you been harmed by this problem? Have others been harmed too?
  4. What things might happen if you continue doing this?
  5. Do you have lots of reasons why you don't want to change this behaviour?

b) Clarifying your feelings

  1. How do you feel about this problem? How strongly do you feel?
  2. What worries you about the future f you don't make a change? How concerned are you?
  3. How do you feel about yourself and your unwillingness to change up until this point?
  4. How doyou feel about getting into this situationand not getting out before now?

c) Are you really interested in changing?

  1. Can you summarise your reasons for making a change?
  2. What reasons are there for remaining the way you are? (c. Pay-offs for the problem. behaviour)

  3. Considering the pros/cons, how strongly do you want to change?
  4. What is keeping you from making a firm, specific commitment to changing right now?

d)To see how optimistic/pessimistic you are about making the change or doing the action:

  1. If you decide to try to change, how confident are you that you could do it? (Give reasons)
  2. Do you have some ideas about how to make the changes? Will you need any help?
  3. Have you read about self-help methods for changing? or therapies etc?
  4. Do you know other people who have made that change?
  5. When will you start?!
